One of the most pressing political issues in New York City in recent years was the need for the New York State Legislature to renew legislation that allows for mayoral control of public schools.
Learn NY was at the forefront of building public pressure on the state legislature for renewal. To generate last-minute awareness of the issue, Learn NY conceived of a series of community events over two days across New York City -- a “yellow school bus tour,” as it was called, of the city’s five boroughs. In addition to several street rallies, the tour’s major stops included churches in Staten Island and Queens and a community center in the Bronx. The Learn NY tour culminated in a spirited press event at the Harlem Zone Promise Academy, featuring Latina performer Katrina.
Wide Angle worked with Learn NY to develop a comprehensive approach to the tour, utilizing the bus as a strong visual backdrop as well as personnel and gear transportation. For the larger stops that involved musical performances, Wide Angle was there with additional equipment and logistical support.
The tour went off without a hitch and, more importantly, the vital legislation was ultimately renewed, following the usual political maneuvering in Albany.
